Beach Volleyball, Hatch Chiles, and Pier Music

Things to do in the South Bay from August 13-19

Hello South Bay!

Itโ€™s mid-August, and this is a pretty solid week if you want to stay close to the beach.

The Manhattan Beach Open is back, Hermosa has a lot going on, Redondo has music on the pier, and Lazy Acres is doing its Hatch chile roast. That last one is either very exciting to you or means absolutely nothing. If you know, you know.

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s going on ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Manhattan Beach Open starts Thursday with the qualifier and the Walk of Fame ceremony, then the main draw takes over Friday through Sunday. The ceremony honors last yearโ€™s winners, Chase Budinger, Miles Evans, Taryn Brasher, and Kristin Nuss, before another group gets a shot at putting their names on the pier. Itโ€™s one of the few South Bay events where the crowd is part of the fun, but parking will be a mess. Walk, bike, rideshare, or use the MB Wave Rider if you can.

๐Ÿ”น Thursday qualifier runs 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM
๐Ÿ”น Walk of Fame ceremony is Thursday at 3:30 PM
๐Ÿ”น Main draw runs Friday through Sunday

๐Ÿ“ Lazy Acres, Hermosa Beach
๐Ÿ•’ Saturday, August 15 | 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM, while supplies last
๐Ÿ’ฐ Free to attend, chiles available for purchase

Hatch chile season is one of those blink-and-you-miss-it food moments, and Hermosa gets its turn this Saturday. Lazy Acres will be roasting fresh Hatch peppers on-site, with medium and hot options available while supplies last. If youโ€™re the kind of person who freezes a batch for later, this is your morning. Go early, because the good stuff tends to move fast.

Los Serenos has an easy guided nature walk through the Ocean Trails area this Saturday. The route is about 1.5 miles on a flat, paved path through restored coastal bluff habitat near Trump National Golf Course, with wetland views and a chance to learn a little about the land under your feet. Itโ€™s also wheelchair accessible, which makes it a useful outdoor option for more people than the usual trail outing. Not every Saturday plan has to involve crowds and parking drama.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Free to browse

Hermosaโ€™s Summer Sidewalk Sale is a good excuse to wander downtown without turning it into a whole production. Local shops will have sales, pop-ups, music, and plenty of reasons to poke around Pier Plaza for a bit. Pair it with lunch, a beach walk, or the Hatch roast earlier in the day and youโ€™ve got a pretty solid Saturday. This is the kind of local errand that can accidentally turn into an afternoon.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Free

The Redondo Pier keeps the summer music going with two easy waterfront nights this week. Thursday brings Fake Matthews Band, a Dave Matthews tribute, and Saturday switches over to rock and soul with the Tom Nolan Band. This is the low-lift version of a summer plan: grab food nearby, find a spot near the west end of the pier, and let the evening handle itself.

๐Ÿ”น Saturday: Tom Nolan Band
๐Ÿ”น Free, outdoors, and weather permitting

Torrance has a good family pick this Saturday with an outdoor movie night at Wilson Park. Lawn games, community booths, food vendors, and family activities start before the movie, so itโ€™s more than just showing up right at showtime. Bring blankets or chairs and make it an easy early evening. Itโ€™s a nice option if the beach-city crowds are not your plan this weekend.

Deep End Live has a good local music pick Saturday night with Triple Bueno, Kat Hall, and SHAG on the bill. Triple Bueno is a Hermosa Beach reggae and dub band, and theyโ€™re heading into an August debut album release after playing BeachLife earlier this year. Itโ€™s ticketed, 21+, and more of an actual night-out plan than a casual pier stop. If you want something after the Hatch roast, Sidewalk Sale, and beach tennis chaos, this is your later move.

๐Ÿ”น Hermosa-based reggae and dub from Triple Bueno
๐Ÿ”น Kat Hall and SHAG also on the bill

๐Ÿ’ฐ Free

Polliwog Park gets a Fleetwood Mac night this Sunday with Gypsy Dreams. Itโ€™s exactly the kind of late-summer concert that makes sense in Manhattan Beach: blankets, picnic dinners, and a park full of people trying to stretch the weekend a little longer. Come early if you care about where you sit. Sunday evening at Polliwog is usually better when you donโ€™t rush it.

Palos Verdes Performing Arts has a Sunday jazz option with the Judy Carmichael Trio at the Norris Pavilion. Carmichael is known for stride piano and swing, with clarinet, saxophone, and guitar rounding out the trio. You can do the full supper club version with dinner from Red Onion, or keep it simpler with show-only seating. A good pick if your Sunday speed is more seated jazz than park blanket.

๐Ÿ”น Supper Club seating includes buffet dinner
๐Ÿ”น Show-only seating also available
๐Ÿ”น Two 45-minute jazz sets with intermission

๐Ÿ’ƒ Zumba in the Park

๐Ÿ“ Julia Field at Alta Vista Park, Redondo Beach
๐Ÿ•’ Monday, August 17 | 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
๐Ÿ’ฐ Free, registration required

If the weekend gets away from you, Monday has a decent reset. Beach Cities Health District is bringing Zumba to Alta Vista Park for a free outdoor class led by instructors from the Center for Health & Fitness. Itโ€™s low-commitment, outside, and probably more useful than telling yourself youโ€™ll start fresh next week. Bring water and wear something you can move in.

๐Ÿ”น Free outdoor fitness class
๐Ÿ”น Registration required, walk-ups welcome
๐Ÿ”น Part of Beach Cities Health Districtโ€™s Summer Free Fitness series

๐Ÿ’ฐ Free

If youโ€™ve got little kids and need something easy midweek, The Point has its Kids Club on Wednesday morning. Itโ€™s free, outdoors, and built for the stroller crowd, with kid-friendly entertainment and space to wander before lunch. Not a huge production, which is kind of the point. Grab coffee, let them burn a little energy, and call it a win.

๐Ÿ”น Free morning kids programming
๐Ÿ”น Good for younger kids and families
๐Ÿ”น Restaurants and shops nearby

Expect disco and funk on the lawn, with dinner, drinks, and dessert close by if you want to make it an easy after-work plan. Bring a blanket or low chair and keep it simple. Itโ€™s a good one if youโ€™re trying to get out without making a whole weekend-level commitment.
