September is flying by, but summer clearly isn’t ready to leave us yet. It’s been hot out there, and I think we’re all ready for a little cooler weather.
This week gets a little interesting. We’ve got goth night by the pier, horses in Rolling Hills, movies on the beach, and plenty more happening around the South Bay.

Goth, dark wave, and alternative hits take over the dance floor at Deep End Live. Beach Goth Night is a DJ party with a late start, so there’s time to grab dinner before heading over. If your friends have been talking about going dancing, this gives you something to send to the group chat. Allow a little extra time to park and walk to the venue.

You can make a weekend of this or start with a look around the marketplace. The 10th annual festival brings together performances, workshops, and instruments from brands and independent makers. Friday’s concert takes place at the George Nakano Theatre, while Saturday’s marketplace is in the Entry Plaza. If you’ve been curious about learning to play, browsing the instruments is a good place to start.

We spend plenty of time enjoying the coast. This is a morning to help take care of it. Coastal Cleanup Day brings volunteers together to collect trash from beaches and waterways, with local sites available through Heal the Bay. Pick your location before heading out and follow its registration instructions. Completing the waiver ahead of time will save you a step when you arrive.

🌸 South Bay Orchid Society Fall Show & Sale

This one is for the friend who somehow always has room for another plant. Society members will display their blooming orchids, while vendors offer orchids, other plants, pots, and growing supplies. You can ask growers questions before buying, which is useful if your last orchid didn’t go quite as planned. Admission is paid at the door, and there’s a plant-holding area for purchases while you keep browsing.

🎸 Lawndale Lowrider Car Show + Blues Festival

Lowriders and live blues share the afternoon at this community event from the City of Lawndale and South Bay Locals. The car show joins the 13th annual Blues Festival, with The Blues Gypsys, Redd House, and Bill Magee Band on the flyer. Come for the cars and give yourself time to catch some music. This is a good one to keep in mind if you’re looking beyond your usual weekend stops.

Rolling Hills Estates turns 69 and throws a western-theme birthday party at Empty Saddle Club. Expect horses, family activities, and an easy afternoon with neighbors. Admission is free, and an all-day activities wristband is available on the official page if you want the full ride experience.

10 Things I Hate About You is playing on the sand in Hermosa. Grab dinner to go, bring a blanket, and meet some friends for a movie by the water. Low-back chairs are welcome, and a sweatshirt is worth packing for later. Donations help keep these community screenings going.

Arrive early enough to collect your headphones before the performance begins.

The seventh annual community swim supports youth mental health services through the South Bay Youth Project. Participants can choose a swim distance or join by paddleboard or kayak. There are no official race results or awards for speed, with the focus on coming together for a local cause. If you’re staying dry, you can support a friend from shore or donate through the organizer’s website.

A whole ensemble of ukuleles can cover a lot of ground. This Canadian youth group brings classical music, jazz, swing, folk, and contemporary favorites to the stage, adding bass, percussion, and vocals along the way. They’re celebrating 45 years of performing, with past appearances including the 2010 Winter Olympics. A good Sunday afternoon pick for anyone curious to hear what this little instrument can do.

Cubensis headlines the second afternoon of Hermosa’s September concert series, with The Lucky Effect from South Bay Music Connection opening. That gives you a pretty straightforward Sunday plan: meet some friends, find a place on the sand, and stay for the music. The city says the performances are suitable for all ages. Pick a meeting spot beforehand if your group is arriving separately.

Keep one small plan for the middle of the week. The Redondo Pier Association and Cancer Support Community South Bay are bringing yoga to the pier on September Wednesdays. Put your mat by the door in the morning if you’re heading over after work, and leave time to walk to the west end. You can add a stroll afterward or just enjoy having made it down to the water.
